From Concept to Cut: Our Process at DHD
Whether you’ve got a brilliant idea for a film – or you know you should have one but aren’t sure where to start – here’s how we turn a spark of inspiration into a finished film that makes you proudly say, ‘Yes! That’s us!’
Step 1: The Discovery Call
Everything starts with a chat. No pressure – just a proper conversation to understand what you’re trying to achieve, including:
- Your Goals
Are you looking to increase brand awareness or reposition yourselves, launch a new product, boost sales, or educate a user? We’ll step back to understand the problem your film is solving. References of campaigns you loved (or didn’t!) are always helpful.
- Audience & Tone
Who are we talking to, and how should they feel? Are we going for playful, aspirational, cinematic or more documentary style? We’ll also discuss specific messaging, call-to-actions, voiceovers, and any motion graphics needed.
- Distribution
Thinking about where your film will live helps ensure it’s shot and edited the right way. Will it be a website hero, a social reel or paid ads, screened at live events, or all of the above?
- Timeline and Budget
We’ll do our best to accommodate any deadlines or budgets you may have.
- Brand Assets
You’ll let us know about brand guidelines, existing content or campaigns, or anything we should build on.
This call sets the foundation.
Step 2: Proposal & Agreement
Once we’re aligned, Steven dives into the nitty gritty and puts together a clear proposal so we’re all on the same page, creatively, practically, and financially. You give the go ahead, and we dive in!
Step 3: Concept Development
We develop the creative concept and share it in a way that’s easy to visualise and collaborate.
This includes elements like:
- Reviewing competitors and past campaigns to see what worked (we like to make sure you have the creative edge)
- Forming mood boards with visual references
- Writing a script or interview questions
- Shot lists or storyboards
- Selecting music for your approval (early sign-off helps shape the edit)
The goal is a concept that feels true to you, so we send it all over for your feedback and refinement.
Step 4: Organising the Logistics
Once the concept is locked, we switch gears into planning mode.
That might mean:
- Location scouting
- Scheduling and logistics planning
- Prepping gear
- Letting you know what to expect on the day (and what to wear if you’re on camera)
We’ll send final confirmations so everyone feels prepared and relaxed.
Step 5: Production Day/s
Good planning means we will have all our ducks in a row for an excellent shoot!
Step 6: Post-Production
After the shoot, the story really comes together.
You’ll receive a private review link to watch your film and share feedback.
We like to look at the bigger picture to make sure your film shines, so depending on what we discussed you may also receive:
- Social reels or bite-sized snippets for paid ads
- Thumbnails for YouTube or Instagram
- An animated logo or motion graphics to level up your brand!
The end result? A film that looks great, feels right, and works hard wherever it’s shown.
