Golden Thread Gallery
A striking new website for a leading contemporary visual arts gallery
Golden Thread Gallery, established in 1998, is Northern Ireland’s leading contemporary visual arts gallery and arts charity. Their mission is to create a context, challenge perceptions, promote creativity, and deliver contemporary visual art for all. They strive to be a destination where every visitor is engaged, educated, challenged, and inspired by visual art.
Understanding GTG’s Vision
This project began with in-depth meetings to understand the GTG team’s needs and aspirations for a new website. The gallery needed an online presence that would reflect their dynamic exhibitions and events, engage a diverse audience, and provide seamless access to information about their programs and initiatives.
The Problems
The issues with the Golden Thread Gallery website started visually but during our user experience research phase, we quickly unearthed issues with usability, readability and accessibility.
- Lack of branded design
- Poor text readability over images
- Non descriptive call to actions
- Unstructured content
- Difficult content management system
Website Design
The UX research conducted gained valuable insights into the gallery’s audience, their behaviours, and expectations. This research informed Dan’s design strategy, ensuring the website would be intuitive, user-friendly, and aligned with the gallery’s mission.
Inspired by the architectural form of the gallery’s building, Dan incorporated its distinctive shapes into the website’s design elements and animations. This created a cohesive visual identity that resonates with the gallery’s physical space, enhancing the user’s experience with Golden Thread brand.
Website Build
Lead Dev, Matthew took the reins and brought the design to life ensuring the site is not only fast, responsive, and easy to navigate but follows the beautiful new UI. We implemented a content management system that allows the gallery’s staff to easily update information, ensuring the website remains current and reflective of their dynamic programming.
The Result
We’re very proud of the end result but this project goes so much deeper than just being visually appealing.
The team at GTG now have a functional, beautiful, user centric website which is easy to update meaning their customers are informed of the latest galleries, exhibitions and events.
